Transcripts and GRE Scores: Send Them in October
Every December I watch strong applicants lose points on logistics, not merit. Their essays were ready. Their transcripts were sitting in a registrar queue, or their GRE scores had never been sent because they skipped the free sends on test day and balked at paying later. October is when you fix that, while fixing it is still cheap and boring. The classic Princeton Review graduate timeline, archived by Swarthmore College, puts it plainly for October: request your official transcripts, and send your recommenders the packet they need. I would add a third item: audit your test scores, school by school, this week.
The score math nobody runs in time
The GRE General Test costs $220 in the United States, according to ETS, and your fee includes sending scores to up to four recipients if you name them on test day. Every additional score report ordered later costs $40 per recipient, per the current ETS fee schedule. Official scores reach institutions about 8 to 10 days after the test, and scores stay valid for five years. You can retake the test once every 21 days, up to five times in a rolling 12 months, but a late retake is a poor plan B: a test taken in late November leaves almost no slack before December deadlines.

Run the eight-school case, because it is the common one. Name four schools on test day and pay for four more sends: $220 plus $160 equals $380. Name nobody on test day and order all eight later: $220 plus $320 equals $540. Same scores, same schools, $160 apart, decided by a screen most people rush through at the end of a two-hour test. Decide your four before you sit down. One relief valve if cost is the barrier: ETS's fee reduction program lets eligible applicants register for the General Test for $100 with an approved voucher, per ETS's 2026-27 fee reduction form, so ask before you pay full price.
Transcripts: the slowest item on your list
Transcripts feel instant because the portal says submitted. They are not. Registrars process in business days, some schools still mail paper, and a transcript that excludes your fall grades is fine for most December deadlines while one stuck in a hold for an unpaid balance is not fine at any speed. Order one official transcript for every institution you have attended, check each application portal a week later to confirm receipt, and clear any registrar holds now, in October, when the bursar's line is short.
Know what your deadlines actually require, because programs differ in ways that change your week. UC Davis Economics, with a December 15, 2026 deadline for Fall 2027, states that the application, statement of purpose, personal history statement, and resume must all be in by the deadline, while letters and scores can follow, though your file is not reviewed until everything arrives. UCLA Economics closes earlier, December 1, 2026, requires the GRE General Test and three letters. A neighboring UCLA program, Ethnomusicology, also due December 1, does not require the GRE at all. There is no generic checklist; there is only your programs' pages, read closely, in October.
Your one-hour October checklist
One: list every program, its deadline, and whether it requires the GRE, a subject test, or nothing. Two: confirm your four free test-day recipients, or order outstanding sends today at $40 each. Three: order all transcripts and screenshot the confirmations. Four: confirm each recommender has your resume, your draft statement, and their deadline in writing. Five: calendar a receipt check one week out. An hour of administration in October buys you a December spent improving your statement instead of refreshing portals. That is the trade this month offers, and it expires.
FAQ
How much does the GRE cost in 2026? The GRE General Test costs $220 in the United States, according to ETS. Eligible applicants can register for $100 with an approved ETS fee reduction voucher.
How many free GRE score reports do I get? Four, if you name the recipients on test day as part of your test fee. Each additional score report ordered later costs $40 per recipient, per the ETS fee schedule.
How long do GRE scores take to arrive, and how long are they valid? Official scores typically reach institutions about 8 to 10 days after the test, and scores remain valid for five years.
