GRFP Deadlines Are This Week: Submit Oct. 19-23
If you are applying to the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program this cycle, your deadline is not coming. It is here. Applications are due this week, at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time on the day assigned to your field, under solicitation NSF 26-526, and NSF does not accept late applications. Reference letters were due Friday, October 16. What is left is the part entirely in your control: a clean, complete submission, filed early enough that a portal hiccup cannot end your year. Here is the final-week checklist I give my own students.
Know your exact day, because it depends on your field
The deadline follows the first Major Field of Study you selected, not your department name. Life Sciences is due Monday, October 19. Computer and Information Science and Engineering, Materials Research, Psychology, and the Social Sciences, including STEM Education and Learning, are due Tuesday, October 20. Engineering is due Thursday, October 22. Chemistry, Geosciences, Mathematical Sciences, and Physics and Astronomy are due Friday, October 23. Every deadline is 8:00 p.m. Eastern, which is 5:00 p.m. Pacific; students on the West Coast lose submissions every year by treating 8 p.m. as local time. Confirm your field's date in the portal today, not on the day itself.

What is actually at stake
The fellowship provides three years of support inside a five-year fellowship period: a $37,000 annual stipend paid to you, plus a $16,000 cost-of-education allowance paid to your university in place of tuition and mandatory fees. That is $53,000 of support per funded year and $159,000 across the three funded years. It is also portable in a way most assistantships are not, which is why the final-week details are worth an hour of paranoia. Check eligibility one last time against the current rules, which are stricter than older summaries: for this cycle, graduate applicants must be in the first year of their first graduate degree program, applicants who have already earned a master's degree are not eligible, and second-year graduate students are not eligible. If something in your record is borderline, the solicitation text governs, not a blog post, including this one.
The submission-day checklist
Submit a full day early if your field allows your schedule to do it; the portal slows down on deadline afternoons every year. Before you press submit: open both statements as the final PDFs and read them on screen for broken formatting, orphaned headings, and figure captions that survived the upload. Confirm the Intellectual Merit and Broader Impacts sections are clearly headed in both essays, since reviewers are instructed to look for them. Verify your transcripts uploaded and are legible, and check the portal's reference-letter status page one final time; a missing letter is the writer's problem until the deadline passes, at which point it becomes yours. Screenshot your submission confirmation. And know the one merciful rule in this process: you may withdraw without the application counting against your lifetime attempts until November 15, 2026, per NSF, which matters only if you discover a genuine eligibility problem. For everyone else: file it, screenshot it, and go do something kind for your letter writers.
FAQ
When is my NSF GRFP deadline? By field, at 8 p.m. ET: Life Sciences October 19; Computer and Information Science and Engineering, Materials Research, Psychology, and Social Sciences October 20; Engineering October 22; Chemistry, Geosciences, Mathematical Sciences, and Physics and Astronomy October 23, 2026.
How much is the GRFP worth? A $37,000 annual stipend plus a $16,000 cost-of-education allowance, for three funded years within a five-year fellowship: $53,000 per funded year, $159,000 in total.
My reference letter is missing. What can I do? Check the portal status page and contact the writer immediately with the submission link. Letters were due October 16, so act today; a polite, specific nudge with the deadline stated plainly is appropriate.
Can I withdraw without penalty? NSF allows withdrawal until November 15, 2026, without the application counting toward the number of times you have applied, which is an option only if you discover a real eligibility problem after submitting.
