Knight-Hennessy Due Today at 1pm PT: Final Checks

By The Editorial TeamUpdated October 6, 20264 min read

If you are applying to Knight-Hennessy Scholars, your deadline is not tonight. It is today, Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at 1:00 pm Pacific Time, according to Stanford's Knight-Hennessy site. That is 4:00 pm Eastern. Every year strong applicants lose hours by treating this like a midnight deadline, so I will put the urgent part first: submit the Knight-Hennessy application this morning if you possibly can, then spend the rest of the day on the separate Stanford program application, which has its own clock. This is a two-application process, and confusing the two is the most expensive mistake in this fellowship.

The two applications, stated plainly

Application one is Knight-Hennessy itself. Penn State's Undergraduate Research and Fellowships Mentoring office lists what it contains: a one-page resume or CV, transcripts, standardized test scores if your Stanford program requires them, three short-answer responses, two essays totalling one thousand words combined on the influences in your life and how Stanford with Knight-Hennessy prepares you for your intentions, two letters of recommendation, and a video supplement of two minutes. There is no application fee for the Knight-Hennessy application itself, though your Stanford degree program may charge one, according to program summaries of the 2027 cycle.

Application two is admission to a full-time Stanford graduate or professional degree program, applied for separately. You must submit it by the earlier of your program's Knight-Hennessy applicant deadline or December 1, 2026. Programs vary, and some, like the MBA, have earlier round deadlines, so the December 1 date is a ceiling, not a promise. If you submit Knight-Hennessy today and never submit the Stanford program application, you cannot be a Scholar. I have seen applicants treat the fellowship as the whole application. It is half of it.

The final-morning checklist I would actually run

First, recommenders. Confirm both letters show as received in the portal, not just requested. If one is missing at 9 am Pacific, send a short, gracious note with the exact deadline time, 1:00 pm Pacific today, and a phone call if you have that relationship. Do not wait until noon to discover this.

Second, the video. The two-minute video supplement does not need to be a production. It does need to be watchable: record it, play it back fully, and check that the audio is clear and the file uploads and previews in the portal. Video upload failures are the classic final-hour failure because files are large. Upload it before you do your final essay proofread, not after.

Third, the essays, within the program's own rules. Knight-Hennessy requires your materials to be your own ideas and voice, and its current AI policy does not permit using AI to generate drafts or to rewrite materials so they sound substantially different from your natural voice, with limited brainstorming uses permitted, according to program guidance summarized for the 2027 cycle. So today's edit is a human proofread: names spelled correctly, word count inside the combined limit, no paragraph left from an earlier draft aimed at a different program.

Fourth, submit, then screenshot. Submit before 1:00 pm Pacific, save the confirmation, and only then turn to the Stanford program application. Finalists are notified January 27, 2027, Immersion Weekend is March 5 to 6, 2027, and Scholars are announced March 16, 2027, per the 2027 cohort timeline. You have months of waiting ahead. Do not spend them wondering whether the submit button worked.
