Jane Street Fellowship: $50K, Due Nov. 13

Most fellowships I cover here are government programs with portals from another decade. This one is a trading firm buying a year of your research life at a price that deserves your attention: full tuition and fees for the upcoming academic year, plus a 50,000 dollar stipend, plus an expense-paid invitation to visit and give a talk. The Jane Street Graduate Research Fellowship opened for its 2027 cycle on September 24, 2026, and applications close November 13, 2026. From today, October 20, that is 24 days. Enough time to do this properly, not enough time to start next month.

Check the eligibility box before anything else

The fellowship supports doctoral students in four fields, and the field list is a hard gate: electrical engineering and computer science, mathematics, physics, or statistics, per the Harvard FAS listing for the 2027 Graduate Research Fellowship and Jane Street's own fellowship announcement. You must have at least one year remaining in your PhD at the time of the award, or be committed to beginning a program the following fall, and remain an active, full-time student in good standing at a degree-granting institution in the United States, Canada, or Europe for the award year. International students are eligible. Two things follow. First, if your field is adjacent, economics or operations research, say, do not spend 24 days hoping; check your department's classification against the four named fields with the program contact before you draft anything. Second, unlike the federal fellowships, there is no citizenship gate, which makes this one of the few large awards an international doctoral student can chase this fall.

The money, stated precisely

ComponentAmountNotes
Tuition and feesFull cost, one academic yearPaid for the upcoming year
Stipend50,000 dollarsTaxable; may be subject to withholding
Finalist award5,000 dollarsPaid to finalists, not only to fellows
Talk invitationExpenses paidVisit an office, present on any topic

Read the finalist line twice. Even a strong-but-not-selected application can return 5,000 dollars, which changes the expected-value math on your 24 days. Compare this structure with how a federal offer is built in our guide to reading a funding offer: private fellowships put more of the money in the stipend and less in allowances to your institution, which usually means more of it reaches you.

Workback timeline chart for the November 13 deadline A 24-day workback plan from October 20 to the November 13, 2026 deadline, with the submission buffer placed before the deadline, not on it.

The 24-day plan I would follow

Days 1 to 3: confirm eligibility in writing and ask your recommenders today, not after your draft exists. Recommenders are the long pole in every fellowship; our standing advice in how to ask for letters of recommendation applies with extra force on a private timeline, because there is no portal nagging them on your behalf.

Days 3 to 12: draft the research statement as a talk abstract first. This fellowship ends with fellows giving a talk on any topic to Jane Street staff and other fellows. Write the statement so its best paragraph could open that talk: a hard problem, your angle on it, and why the angle is yours. The firm's listed values, technical excellence, intellectual curiosity, and humility, are not decoration; the statement should sound like a person, not a grant form.

Days 12 to 18: one outside reader, one full revise, and your CV cut to what a quantitative reader respects: problems solved, tools built, results with numbers. If you are also in the final submission window for another award this month, sequence ruthlessly; the Davidson Fellowship plan in our NOAA Davidson guide has a December 7 deadline, so Jane Street goes first on your calendar, Davidson second.

Days 18 to 24: submit by November 11 and keep November 12 and 13 as pure buffer. Private portals fail on deadline day at the same rate as government ones, and there is no help desk heroics clause in the terms.
