Hertz Fellowship: Your Oct 30 Deadline Plan

By The Editorial TeamUpdated October 13, 20265 min read

If you are an applied-science, engineering, or mathematics doctoral student, the most generous fellowship most people have never heard of closes in 17 days. The Hertz Foundation lists the 2027 Hertz Fellowship application deadline as October 30, 2026, with applications having opened August 31. Fellowship packages are valued at up to $250,000 over five years, according to the foundation's published funding information. This is a plan for the remaining days, built from the foundation's own dates, not a generic essay lecture.

First, check that you are actually eligible

The Hertz Foundation's eligibility rules, as published for this cycle, are specific. You must be a US citizen or permanent resident. You must be applying to, or enrolled in, a full-time, in-person PhD program in the applied physical or biological sciences, mathematics, or engineering at a US institution, and you must be in your first or second year of that PhD in fall 2027, when funding begins. You must also intend to aim your work at major, near-term problems facing society. If any one of those fails, stop here and put your 17 days into a fellowship you can actually win. That is not pessimism; it is the highest-value sentence in this article.

The dates that run your calendar

The application closes October 30, 2026. Recommender forms are due separately, on Monday, November 2, 2026, at 6:00 pm Pacific, according to the Hertz Foundation's recommender guidance. First-round interviews run in December 2026 and January 2027, second-round interviews and finalist notifications follow in February 2027, recipients are notified in April 2027, and the public announcement lands in May 2027, per the foundation's timeline.

That three-day gap between your deadline and your recommenders' deadline is a gift, but only if your recommenders know about it accurately. Tell them November 2 at 6:00 pm Pacific in writing, not October 30, and not a vague end of October.

The 17-day plan I would actually follow

Days 1 to 3: register your four recommenders in the portal. Hertz does not take ordinary recommendation letters; recommenders complete the foundation's own evaluation form, with checkbox questions up front that the foundation says matter to its review. Registering them first starts their clock while you write, and a recommender surprised on October 29 is a recommender who submits a thin form.

Days 3 to 10: draft the research sections. The foundation's FAQ is explicit that no formal research proposal is required, because the fellowship funds the person rather than a project. You do summarize prior and current research experience and the interests you intend to pursue. Write those summaries for a brilliant reader outside your subfield: what the problem is, why it is near-term, and what you personally have already done that proves you can move it.

Days 10 to 14: transcripts and the unglamorous sections. Unofficial transcripts are accepted for the initial application, with official copies potentially requested later. Do not let a registrar's office become your bottleneck in the final week.

Days 14 to 17: submit by October 29, not October 30. Portals fail on deadline days, and you still need a calm day to confirm each recommender has the form, the deadline, and the time zone. Then use the gap: check in once, politely, before November 2.

What the money actually looks like

The foundation publishes two coordination options. Under Hertz-only funding, the package is a $38,000 nine-month personal stipend plus a full tuition equivalent, renewable for up to five years, with an additional $5,000 a year for fellows with dependent children. Under coordination with another awarding institution, the Hertz period carries a $44,000 nine-month stipend plus full tuition, with a $9,000 yearly supplemental stipend during the partner period. Either way, the five-year value reaches up to $250,000. That is why 17 focused days are a rational investment even at long odds.
