Churchill Scholarship: Nomination Due Nov. 2

By The Editorial TeamUpdated October 12, 20265 min read

Some deadlines reward whoever started in September. The Churchill Scholarship, with a nomination deadline of Monday, November 2, 2026 at 5 pm Eastern, rewards whoever starts today and works the problem in the right order. According to the UC San Diego summary I reviewed this week, the award is worth approximately $65,000 for a year of master's study in engineering, mathematics, or the sciences at the University of Cambridge, based at Churchill College. Eighteen awards are made a year: 16 Churchill Scholarships and 2 Kanders-Churchill Scholarships in science policy, per that summary. Here is the 21-day version of the plan I would hand a student in my office.

First, check whether you are actually eligible

Do this today, not after you have drafted essays. The UC San Diego summary lists the core conditions: US citizenship, a bachelor's degree in hand by the time the scholarship begins, and status as a graduating senior or someone who graduated within the past 12 months for the general Churchill Scholarship. Kanders-Churchill applicants, who pursue a Master of Public Policy, are not under that 12-month limit in the summary. Your institution may nominate a maximum of two students, which is why the campus step below controls everything.

There is no minimum GPA, according to the same summary, though it notes most applicants carry a very high average, generally 3.8 or above. Read that honestly. It does not mean a 3.6 cannot apply. It means a 3.6 needs research achievement that makes the committee stop worrying about the transcript.

This week: secure the nomination path

Your campus has its own process and its own earlier date. As one concrete example from the UC San Diego summary, that campus's deadline to be considered for nomination is October 19, 2026, a full two weeks before the national deadline. Your campus date will differ, and finding it is your first task. Email your fellowships office today with one sentence: you are seeking Churchill nomination, and you need the campus deadline and internal requirements.

In the same week, line up your recommenders. The summary specifies four letters of recommendation plus an institutional endorsement letter. Four letters is more than most applications ask, and recommenders need lead time more than they need your gratitude later. Ask by October 16, send each recommender your draft statement and CV by October 19, and confirm receipt of the instructions the same day.

Next week: the 1,000-word statement

The personal statement, capped at 1,000 words in the UC San Diego summary, must give the committee a clear sense of who you are, how your research interests developed, and why Churchill College and Cambridge fit your future plans. My advice is structural: spend the first third on the research problem and what you have already done about it, the middle third on the specific Cambridge program and people you would work with, and the last third on where this degree leads. Every paragraph should contain at least one specific: a method, a lab, a result, a paper. Adjectives are not evidence.

Draft it by October 23, put it away for a day, then cut 10 percent. Churchill readers are scientists. They reward compression.

Final week: submit like an adult

By October 29, your file should be complete at the campus level: statement, transcripts, four confirmed letters, and the endorsement process in the fellowships office's hands. The national nomination deadline is November 2 at 5 pm Eastern, which is 2 pm Pacific, and I tell every student the same thing: a deadline at 5 pm means your work is done by October 30. Portals fail, time zones confuse, and no committee has ever been moved by an explanation.

The funding package, per the summary, covers university and college fees, round-trip airfare, visa and health surcharge costs, a living stipend set 5 percent above the UK Research Council standard, and a possible special research grant of $4,000. That is a fully funded year at Cambridge for the price of three disciplined weeks. Spend them.
